How to flirt over text: a little spark, no pressure
By Chatik · Reviewed
Good text flirting gives the other person something easy to respond to and room to choose the mood. Start lightly, notice how they participate, and ask before making the conversation more intimate. You do not need a perfect line; you need an exchange that both people want.

Start with a shared mood, not a performance
Flirting over text is a playful invitation. A curious question, a small compliment or an affectionate joke can make a conversation warmer. It is not a contest to impress someone, and a friendly reply does not automatically mean they want romantic or intimate messages.
In an anonymous chat you know little about the person. Keep the first exchange easy to decline, without guessing their appearance, relationship status or preferences. On Chatik, choose Flirt 18+ when that is your intention; the category still leaves each person free to set their own boundaries.
Three opening messages you can make your own
Use one idea rather than sending a string of questions. These are invented examples, not real conversations or lines that guarantee a reply. Change the wording so it sounds like you.
- A light invitation: “I feel like a playful conversation tonight. Does that fit your mood?”
- A small choice: “For an imaginary first date: a quiet café or a walk with no destination?”
- A little humour: “I can offer one terrible joke and one surprisingly good question. Which goes first?”
Build on the answer before adding another question
An exchange feels more personal when you respond to what was actually said. If they choose a café, share a small detail about your own choice and give them a next step. You can create chemistry through attention without asking for a name, photo or exact location.
For example: You: “A quiet café or a walk?” Them: “A café, definitely.” You: “Same. I would pretend to be choosing a dessert while really enjoying the company. Are you the person who shares the last bite?” That gives them a playful opening; they can answer, joke back or keep it ordinary.
Keep compliments connected to the conversation: “I like how you tell that story” or “Your sense of humour is making this easy.” A compliment does not require a compliment in return. Leave the person room to receive it without having to perform enthusiasm.
Ask before changing the tone
If you want a more openly romantic mood, name the change. “I am enjoying this. Would a little more flirting be welcome?” is clearer than assuming that an emoji, a chosen category or a previous compliment gives permission for anything else.
eSafety describes consent as freely given permission that can be withdrawn. In practice, make it easy to say yes, no or “not that topic”.
An answer such as “playful is fine, but no intimate questions” is a boundary, not a challenge. You can reply, “Works for me; we will keep it light.” If you are unsure what the other person means, pause and ask rather than escalating.
A brief reply is not a puzzle you have to solve
A short answer can mean many things: someone may be distracted, shy, tired or simply not interested. Text alone does not tell you which. Avoid turning “haha” or an emoji into proof of attraction, and do not use a delay as a reason to send repeated demands for attention.
You can offer one gentle reset: “Happy to just chat if that feels better.” If they decline flirting, accept the answer. If the exchange stops, leave it there or end the conversation. Being able to stop without an argument is part of a comfortable chat.
Keep a little mystery and a clear way out
You can talk about favourite music, an imaginary date or a funny habit without revealing contact details. Avoid sending your home address, workplace, passwords or payment information. Anonymous entry does not prevent another person from copying what you share.
If someone ignores a boundary, you do not owe them a more convincing explanation. Stop the conversation. Chatik has report and block actions; use them when appropriate. These controls are not a guarantee that every interaction is safe or reviewed by a moderator.

Pick a light opening, respond to the person in front of you and leave room for a no. A little spark is enjoyable when neither person has to push the conversation forward.
